Rowdyism

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Made with Miki Wong.

We believe that Rowdyism (in New Cross) lives on and is a way to approach design - an unruly, agitational, nosey, complicated and immediate way of acting, thinking, critiquing and producing.

To us, we saw pigeons as the definition of rowdyism. These birds are known for having quite a bad reputation. They’re often associated with trash, diseases, and in the case of New Cross pigeons, cannibalism. Obviously referring to their occasional feasting of chicken bones littered across New Cross Road. However, we notice how pigeons normally just go about their own business, not really bothering anyone else. Yet their intimidating stares, ugly feet, loud and abrupt flying continue to threaten many of us. So we wanted to explore this unintentional rowdiness and draw attention to the various different types of relationships we share with these birds.

We noticed very early on that almost everyone seems to have a different stance on pigeons. When going around and interviewing people about what they think of pigeons, some expressed their hatred towards them, some expressed sympathy, while some didn’t really have much of an opinion on them. We managed to identify the two main groups however as pigeon lovers and pigeon haters.
